How to Calculate ROAS

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is the most important metric for measuring paid advertising profitability. It tells you exactly how much revenue you generate for every dollar spent on ads.

The formula is simple: ROAS = Revenue ÷ Ad Spend. But understanding what your ROAS should be requires knowing your profit margins — that's what our calculator solves.

Understanding Breakeven ROAS

Breakeven ROAS = 1 ÷ Profit Margin. This is the minimum ROAS needed to cover your product/service costs. Anything above this threshold generates actual profit.

80% margin → 1.25x breakeven

Digital products, SaaS, consulting

50% margin → 2.0x breakeven

Services, premium products

30% margin → 3.33x breakeven

E-commerce, physical products

15% margin → 6.67x breakeven

Low-margin retail, commodities

Key Insight

Many e-commerce businesses target 3-5x ROAS without calculating their actual breakeven. If your margin is only 25%, a 3x ROAS means you're barely breaking even — not profiting.

ROAS Benchmarks by Platform

Google Search Ads

4x – 8x ROAS (high intent = better returns)

Google Shopping / PMax

3x – 6x ROAS (product-based campaigns)

Facebook / Instagram Ads

2x – 4x ROAS (awareness + retargeting)

LinkedIn Ads

1.5x – 3x ROAS (high CPCs but B2B value)

TikTok Ads

2x – 5x ROAS (emerging, high variability)

3 Levers to Improve ROAS

Increase Revenue Per Customer

Raise AOV through upsells, bundles, and cross-sells. A 20% AOV increase directly improves ROAS by 20%.

Reduce Ad Spend Waste

Eliminate underperforming keywords, placements, and audiences. Use negative keywords and placement exclusions aggressively.

Improve Conversion Rates

A/B test landing pages, simplify checkout, and add trust signals. Doubling your conversion rate doubles your ROAS.

Pro Tip

The fastest ROAS improvement usually comes from cutting wasteful spend, not increasing budget. Audit your search term reports and placement reports weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about using the ROAS Calculator

ROAS = Revenue from Ads ÷ Ad Spend. For example, if you spend $1,000 on ads and generate $4,000 in revenue, your ROAS is 4.0x (or 400%). This means you earned $4 for every $1 spent on advertising.
A good ROAS depends on your profit margins. As a general rule: 2x ROAS is breakeven for most businesses (50% margin), 3x-4x is healthy, and 5x+ is excellent. E-commerce businesses typically target 3-5x, while lead generation businesses should calculate breakeven ROAS based on their specific margins.
Breakeven ROAS = 1 ÷ Profit Margin. If your profit margin (before ad costs) is 40%, your breakeven ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5x. Any ROAS above 2.5x is profitable; below is losing money. This is the most important metric for scaling ad spend.
ROAS measures revenue per dollar of ad spend (Revenue ÷ Ad Spend). ROI measures profit as a percentage ((Revenue - Total Costs) ÷ Total Costs × 100). A 4x ROAS with 50% margins means 100% ROI. ROAS is ad-specific; ROI includes all business costs.
Google Search Ads typically achieve 4-8x ROAS due to high purchase intent. Facebook Ads average 2-4x ROAS for e-commerce and lower for lead gen. Set your target based on your breakeven ROAS, then add a profit buffer of at least 30-50%.
